C & M Contractors Installs Cool Roofing Products.

Save money on energy bills with a Cool Roof.

Cool Roof Technology is not new, but proven cost-saving and environmental benefits have launched Cool Roofs to the forefront of "What's Happening" with today's roofing. Evidence of this is the creation of the U.S. EPA's ENERGY STAR? Roof Products Program, which was created to help commercial building owners identify leading roofing products that offer substantial Cool Roof benefits. This program has expanded greatly since its beginning in 1999.

More still, the California Energy Commission, and individual utility districts, now offer rebate incentives to both public and private sector building owners who install Cool Roofs on either existing roofs or during new construction projects. Other utilities across the country are considering similar programs and building codes in Georgia, California and Chicago have already been revised in favor of Cool Roofs.

    19

Cool Roofs are generally white or light-colored roof surfaces that reflect away most solar radiation (high solar reflectance) and readily release any absorbed energy (high thermal emittance). Cool Roof surface temperatures are 30-90 degrees cooler than conventional roofs and depending on building design, lower surface temperatures can translate to 20-50% savings in cooling energy requirements. Cool Roofs are suitable for new construction and for restoring or recovering existing roofs.

Durable and long-lasting Cool Roofs offer substantial cost-saving and environmental benefits. End-users must specify proven, durable products and systems to realize those benefits, which include:

8  Reduced Cooling Energy Demand & Cost
    7  Extended Roof Life
    6  Increased Building Comfort
    5  Reduced Peak HVAC Loads
    4  Downsized HVAC Systems
    3  Reduced Insulation Requirements
    2  Less Environmental Impact

As always, the buyer needs to differentiate those products that are durable and offer long-term heat reflective qualities, from those that offer only short-term benefits and don?t meet the customer?s expectations for longevity or quality.

    Roof Surface Temperatures Presentation

    14

    General Roof Management
recently participated in a presentation that showed the effects different roof products can have on rooftop temperature. A wide variety of roof substrate materials were tested (ambient air temperature was 89?F). Below are photographs and documented results from this presentation. Notice the rooftop temperatures of the white roof materials are much cooler, when compared to the rest of the roof substrate materials.
